The Artist’s Guide to Facial Expressions
This book outlines the relationship between facial anatomy and expression. It demonstrates how changing the smallest details in facial musculature can dramatically affect the emotions portrayed in a face, a very useful skill for any artist to understand and master.
Anatomy for the Artist
A good introduction to anatomy, including several onion-skin page overlays. It falls more on the side of coffee table book than hard-core anatomical reference. The photography is beautiful, and the poses are good. It has helped me out on several occasions.
How To Draw Plants
A great book about botanical illustration techniques, covering plant anatomy, and offering lots of tips and advice specific to each medium. Mediums covered include pencil, pen & ink, watercolor, gouache, scratchboard, acrylic and even photography.
The Artistic Anatomy of Trees
Originally published in 1915, this wonderful book combines techniques, history, and botany. From the author’s note: “If my statements appear dogmatic or dictatorial it is not because I think I can draw trees really well; but only because I know that a large number of people draw them worse.”
