Ornithology Books

Why Birds Sing
David Rothenberg’s exploration of the origin and musicology of birdsongs. Rothenberg is a musican, and he explores the similarities between bird songs and human music. The music theory is in-depth, including songrams.
Winged Migration DVD
Not actually a book, but it fits best under ornithology. Birds have been flapping around the planet in one form or another since before people walked upright, and this movie may make you wonder how much birds have influenced human behavior and culture.
Hope is the Thing with Feathers
This book profiles author Christopher Cokin’s journey to understand endangered and extinct species, including the history of the passenger pigeon. Wonderfully, a surviving population of one of the species profiled in this book, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, has since been located in Arkansas.
The Ghost with Trembling Wings
Scott Weidensaul’s chronicle of the survivial of species believed to be extinct or in serious decline. This book came just a bit too late to include the Ivory-billed Woodpecker’s re-emergence, but it provides a good account of many species.
